[...] Where I am going with all this, is that we need to recognize a trick. I find it rather repulsive these days, to forget pondering the questions of is it real, is it fake, am I confortable with the intentions of a production? It is very discouraging to my heart if someone skips ahead to, “It doesn’t matter, no one can tell the difference.” Another reckless approach, “Let’s just do like what they did, it seems like a good model to follow.” via designiscasual.com [...]

Authenticity happens to be a subject I obsess about. Even developed a theory of authenticity (partially) and wrote a few papers about it. Here's one:

http://issuu.com/PracticalPedal/docs/paradox_of_authenticity

And a novel about it:

http://issuu.com/PracticalPedal/docs/finding_fordlandia

The gist of my thoughts is that the very idea of authenticity is a trick and we should be wary if it is even mentioned. I see it as an attempt to fabricate meaning in a world where decisions have become arbitrary due to technological advances. So authenticity is an attempt to recast arbitrary decisions as necessary.
